More Than a Place to Live. A Place to Thrive!
March 7, 2023
You may be about to decide where you want to live next. If so, congratulations for continuing to take control of your future. Along with where to go, you’re probably also thinking about how you want to live once you make a choice. You want to find a place that’s your best fit and you want to know what you will do when you get there. You have decided to put yourself first!
If you’re like the residents who call Waterman Village home, you believe you have a lot of living to do. And science agrees with you. People across the world are living longer and this is something to celebrate. But it also means that with more years to live, new challenges are possible. We all want to age with quality of life. Science and research have something to say about that too.
Here are the facts:
- Healthy aging is affected by our physical and mental abilities.
- By making healthy choices, we can maximize our ability to continue to do the things that matter to us even as we age.
Along with the possibility of new challenges, a longer life also offers the opportunity to make new choices or continue good habits polished over decades. We can contribute in new ways to our family and community, learn a new language, start a new career, or learn to play the tuba! Making all these decisions—as well as lots of others—depends on our health and the choices we make regarding wellness.
At Waterman Village, our Wellness Program provides plenty of options for our residents. Together, we define plans aligned with individual goals, regardless of skill or ability level. We use a multi-dimensional approach aligned with the philosophy of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA). This means we believe everyone is capable of embracing life within the dimensions of wellness.
Thriving at Every Age
Good health as we age is about the ability to greet each day with purpose and intention. It is about the ability to make choices that let us thrive. This applies to all of us, regardless of where we are on the healthy aging and wellness journey. Let’s face it, there is no typical older person! The World Health Organization reports that some 80-year-olds have levels of physical and mental capacity that compare favorably with 20-year-olds.
Successfully addressing health and wellness is a multi-faceted concept, which means healthy aging requires us to use programming that embraces an integrated, whole-person approach. This is why we work in partnership with residents to keep the brain active and the body moving, even as we engage and inspire the mind and spirit.
What Does This Mean for You?
Although Waterman Village has multiple spaces designed specifically to support healthy aging and wellness, these spaces are more than a place to go for a good stretch! Our gyms and other spaces are where we begin to define a wellness program meant only for you. We want to understand your aspirations and goals. Together we build a road map with that end in sight.
Depending on your unique goals, our team may include physical therapists, physicians, nutritionists, and fitness and lifestyle experts. Our comprehensive healthy aging and wellness program will consider your past level of activity, your interests, your abilities and skills, and your goals. You may be interested in the latest news on breathing and focus, or brain challenges or coordination. Or, you may be interested in approaches that have stood the test of time, like Tai chi or yoga. The common thread throughout our approach? You control your choices based on what matters most to you and will help you reach your goal. And you will have a team to help you every step of the way. Even when we are marching in place!
Our programs are research- and science-based, beginning with your initial wellness assessment as your team tailors your plan to meet your goals. Each session is intentionally kept to a small number of attendees, and all begin to address the dimensions of wellness. Just a few examples of our weekly wellness classes are below.
- State of the art cardio equipment and free weight room
- Multiple daily and weekly fitness classes
- Yoga classes, including chair yoga
- Tai chi
- Breathing and meditation
- Ageless Grace seated fitness
- Able Mind programming
- Water fitness
- Exercise with therapy
These are integrated into an enriching and equally comprehensive schedule of additional activities, all of which help residents stay mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually fit. Six full-time staff members support this deep and broad approach to healthy aging and wellness. Our goal is to empower our residents to achieve their goals, whether they are at the beginning of their healthy aging and wellness journey or evolving along the path.
You should be able to enjoy wellness at every age. You already know you want to stay as physically and socially active as possible. You want to live independently and feel connected to the people you care about. Should you need support or help, you expect to still live with a spirit of independence as you partner with others who are there to empower you each day. You want to do more than live; you want to thrive every day!
